In 2019, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the MP for Manhyia South, filed a lawsuit against Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC’s communications officer, for allegedly making defamatory remarks that aimed to associate him with one of the accused parties in the Canadian women kidnapping case.
The plaintiff sought one million cedis in damages from Mr. Gyamfi.
According to reports, Mr. Gyamfi claimed during a press conference that Dr. Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO (Nana Poku), and Seidu Yakubu, one of the suspected kidnappers, had a romantic relationship.
“Seidu’s association with the NPP is more than meets the eye. He is alleged to be the personal bodyguard of the Asokore Mampong MCE, Alhaji Alidu Seidu, and an errand boy for both Manhyia MP, Hon Mathew Opoku Prempeh and Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (aka Wontumi),” Mr Gyamfi said in a press conference
For defaming Energy Minister Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi was fined Gh500,000.
The decision was handed down on Thursday, October 13, 2022, by the General Jurisdiction 12 of the High Court in Accra, which was presided over by Justice Charles Gyamfi Danquah.
In a news conference in June 2019, Sammy Gyamfi claimed that Seidu Yakubu, one of the suspects in the kidnapping of the two Canadian girls in 2019, was Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s errand boy. The court determined that Sammy Gyamfi had defamed Dr Opoku Prempeh, who is also a congressman for Manhyia South.
Gyamfi was also mandated by the court to issue an apology and retraction.
