Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, the minister of trade and industry, has left the cabinet.

According to sources close to the Minister, he submitted his letter of resignation to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on January 5, 2023.

It is believed that Mr. Kyerematen made this decision so he could concentrate on pursuing his presidential aspirations.

Popularly known as “Alan Cash”, Mr Kyerematen first attempted to lead the New Patriotic Party as its flagbearer in 2007 however he failed as Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo emerged as the winner.

He made other attempts at the Flagbearership position in 2010 and 2014 but he placed second to Nana Akufo Addo.

Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen (born 3 October 1955) is a Ghanaian politician who serves as Minister for Trade and Industry in Ghana, a position he has held since 2017. Kyerematen was Ambassador of Ghana to the United States and later Minister of Trade, Industry, Private Sector Development (PSD) and the Presidential Special Initiatives (PSI), under the President Kufuor-led NPP government.

Kyerematen oversaw the African Trade Policy Centre while working as a trade advisor for the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia (ATPC).

In 2007, Kyerematen ran for the New Patriotic Party’s leadership and received 32.3% of the vote. He came in second place behind Nana Akufo-Addo, who received 47.96% of the vote. In his subsequent bids for the party’s leadership in 2010 and 2014, Kyerematen came in second to Akufo-Addo, the winner of the primary elections. To replace departing Director-General Pascal Lamy, Ghana submitted Kyerematen for the position of WTO director-general in 2012, and the African Union supported his candidacy (AU). He did not, however, make the shortlist for the 2013 selection process.Kyerematen was sworn in as Ghana’s Minister of Trade in 2017.
