According to reports, some military soldiers on duty at the Bank of Ghana (BoG) facility in Takoradi, in the Western Region, beat several uninvolved members of a masquerade troupe who were parading around the city’s streets.
According to reports, the incident happened on December 27, 2022, a Tuesday.
Roberta Monkah, one of the victims, described the attack and claimed that it had left her with cuts under her right eye.
“We were in a procession, and someone lighted firecrackers and rushed back to my fiancé and me. Out of nowhere, three soldiers from the Bank of Ghana approached us and started assaulting my fiancé. So it was there I told them that he was not the one who lit it. But out of nowhere, a soldier from behind kicked me, and I fell, and he hit my lower eye with the butt of his gun, leaving blood gushing out,” she narrated to Empire News.
The Ghana Ports and Harbours Hospital in Takoradi was then used to treat her.
She claims that after filing a complaint at the Takoradi Central Police Station, she was instructed to provide a doctor’s report, which she has yet to acquire for GHc500.
The annual Ankos Festival was recently observed by the residents of Sekondi-Takoradi in the Western Region.
In the twin city during the three days of the festival, also known as the Masquerade Festival, hundreds of people gathered.
Foreign visitors who were in the nation for the holiday festivities joined the Takoradi locals in celebration of the festival this year by dressing in vibrant costumes.
They performed their dance moves as they marched through Takoradi’s main streets while singing along to some well-known Ghanaian tunes.
