In response to what the National Media Commission termed as his unethical journalistic practices, President Akufo-Addo has referred the morning program host of Onua Fm/TV, Godsbrain Smart, also known as Captain Smart, to the commission.

Since it does not augur well for the nation’s democracy, it has voiced worry over the false information and misinformation disseminated under the guise of journalistic discretion and free speech. Additionally, the government is debating legal action against Media General, Onua TV, and Captain Smart.

This is in response to claims made against the President by media professionals that he actively participates in illegal mining, sometimes known as “Galamsey.” In a statement dated October 17, 2022, issued by the Ministry of Information and signed by Deputy Minister Fatimatu Abubakar, it was stated that the allegations made in the widely circulated video called into question the President’s moral character, integrity, and dedication to the fight against irresponsible and illegal mining. It was clearly established that the President is not now participating in galamsey and has never been.

The statement characterized the video’s content as maliciously false, unfounded, and the product of unprofessional and careless journalism.

The government made the decision to send the case to the National Media Commission for assessment and arbitration in light of some of these factors.
